Novara New Year Countdown Publish Date: 15 March 2006
Award winning Irish hosting company Novara.ie is in preliminary discussions with Dublin City Council with a view to helping organise a New Year’s extravaganza on O’Connell Street with the Dublin Spire as its focal point.
Managing Director of Novara.ie, Eoin Costello, commented:
Last New Year's Eve I was in Puerta del Sol (Madrid) in the centre of the capital for the annual midnight countdown(see photo below). There was a great atmosphere, it is a focus point for the capital's festivities and indeed the country’s celebration of the New Year as the event is televised throughout the country. The countdown to the New Year from 10 to 1 is marked by the progress of a large gold ball on top of the Town Hall. In Dublin there is no such focal point for midnight on New Year's.
With the regeneration of O'Connell Street almost complete why not make O’Connell Street and more importantly the Spire the centre stage for the celebration of New Year for Dublin City by staging the countdown to the New Year there. What I would suggest is a countdown from 10 to 1 be projected onto the spire from 4 points, being each of the streets adjoining the Spire. The Lord Mayor or the Taoiseach could verbally count down the seconds as they are projected onto the Spire. It could become an annual event if successful.
As the only technology company located in the heart of Dublin 1, our offices are less than 30 metres from the Spire(indeed we use a stylised version of the Spire in our company logo), Novara.ie would sponsor the cost of the projectors required for the count down.
Unlike the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben or the Statue Of Liberty the Spire, while an interesting technical achievement, is somewhat bereft of personality. Making it the focal point of the capital’s New Year’s celebrations would give it a personality associated with optimism and future focus. It would be it the centre of attention for a very special occasion each year.
It would also help underpin how safe O’Connell Street is these days at night and help repair the damage done to its image caused by the recent riots.
